I remember watching The Mummy (1999) movie when I was still a very small kid. My dad had bought the DVD and he was watching it in the living room. Naturally, the rest of my family, me included, joined him.
When the Mummy first "came to life" on the screen, I freaked out. I mean its only natural that a little kid would be scared. I was so scared that even looking at the cover of the DVD later on would creep me out. It was only after a few years later, when my dad decides to re-watch the film that I started to appreciate and fall in love with the movie. The sets, the props, the compelling motivation of the villain, they were all beautifully done. Fast-forward to present day, when I was loitering around the art store, I found some ceramic jars on sale. They were dirt cheap. Some the design and shapes of those jars just reminded me so much of the canopic jars from the movie. Feeling really inspired, I grabbed a bunch of them home and started doing rough sketches of different designs.

Being a Batman fan, I absolutely loved the Dark Knight Trilogy. When I saw how the "Batarangs" looked in the film, I thought, "Yep, I can make this." So I found some aluminum scraps at home and started sketching the pattern on them. This was a very simple build, and only took me about an hour to complete. Using a scroll saw, the scrap aluminum piece was roughly cut to shape. To grind in the details, especially areas around the "ears", a dremel was used. The piece was then filed and sanded till smooth with wet sand paper. #batman #thedarkknight #darkknight #prop #bat #batarang #movie Reference
Mystery shrouds the Pyro's Mask. No one knows how he looks like or who he is. His flame thrower burns his victims and he might be one of the most dreaded character to encounter from the enemies' team. I suppose that is why my brother was so fascinated with this character from his game. He would spent hours playing as the Pyro character from the game Team Fortress 2, burning his enemies with his flame thrower. This project was done in conjunction with the Detonator as a set. Alice: Madness returns was a horror game that I was too scared to play, and yet really intrigued by its game designs and story telling. When I first saw the weapon used by the game's protagonist, named the Vorpal Blade, I fell in love with the design straight away. I thought, I have to make this. Side by side comparison of in-game weapon and prop replica.
This project started out as something to get my brother off his computer games. He was very obsessed with the game, Team Fortress 2, and would spend hours and hours playing. To get him back to the "real world", I decided to involve him in this project. I asked him about his favorite in-game weapon and got the answer, "Detonator". We researched about this in-game weapon together, googled images of this weapons, snapped shot different angles of it, checked out how it worked in game and even slowed video recordings of it down to a frame at a time, observing every little detail. Side by side comparison of in-game design and the crafted prop replica.
